When taking the Sports Business Management class, I was apart of a final assignment, what we called our "Front Office Presentations". Each group was responsible for researching and learning about a given organization. The deliverables for this project were a report, a slideshow, and an oral presentation. My group's organization was the UFC. As a group we learned all about this organization, as well as got the opportunity to speak with Brit Santypal, the Vice President and head of Partnership Marketing for the UFC. This project allowed me to exemplify my teamwork skills, while also giving me the opportunity to learn about an organization, I would otherwise not know much about. This slideshow is one I am particularly proud of, as I spent a lot of time on the visuals, and think it turned out very well.
I have gotten the privilege to attend both the 12th annual Michigan Sport Business Conference in Ann Arbor, as well as Michigan State's 1st annual Business of Sports Summit. Both of these conferences provided me the opportunity to listen to professionals talk about their real world experiences within the sports industry, as well as network with different organizations, and students. I have gained valuable knowledge from these conferences about careers within the sports industry, as well as life advice for things like interviews and networking.
My most impactful internship has been with the Lansing Sports Commission. I did a numerous amount of tasks to assist in different sporting events that came to the Lansing area. Some events I got the opportunity to work were the NCAA Men's Golf Championship Tournament, Horseshoe World Tournament, MHSAA softball, baseball and soccer finals, and many more! I was able to gain knowledge on the behind the scenes of a career in sports business, and it only strengthened my career aspirations of working in the sports industry.
The biggest group project I have had to date was a marketing audit. As a group we had to evaluate a fortune 500 company. This included research on the brand about their strategies and tactics, how the company implemented these and finally how this affects the company. Although I learned a lot about the content, the biggest lesson I took away from this experience was working with a group on a project of this magnitude. This audit took a lot of communication between group members and time management as it was a semester long project.
I was a part of Spartan Sports Report - a student ran sports broadcasting platform catered to MSU sports. During my time in this organization, I had the opportunity to film sporting events, edit that film, and assist in writing scripts for the broadcast.
The group AWSM, also stands for the Association of Women in Sports Media. As a group, we are able to discuss with each other the importance of the diversity in sports, and the impact women have on the industry as a whole. We have zoomed in with women in sports as well and learned from their experiences. We have also had the opportunity to strengthen our resume and interview skills.
Future Leaders in Sports and Entertainment (FLISE), focuses on young men and women looking to go into the sports industry, primarily for marketing and business students, who focus on creating opportunities for themselves in the industry, and discussing their future goals and aspirations with their peers. This also presents great networking opportunities with current students, as well as multiple Alumni we have got to chat with over zoom.
